In a quirky announcement, Zomato has introduced a weekend offer for its Gold service, offering a six-month subscription for just Rs 30. The promotion comes after the recent controversy surrounding CEO Deepinder Goyal, who posted an ad for a Chief of Staff position, requiring applicants to pay a Rs 20 lakh “opportunity fee” and “work for free” during the first year.
The controversy originated with Goyal’s public declaration of the position stating that it would provide “10x more learning than a two-year degree from a top management school,” for which candidates had to deposit a sizable amount as fees. Goyal later announced that the company received around 18,000 applications.
This angered the users online, and in a subsequent statement, Goyal explained that the fee was actually used to filter unsuitable candidates who could not grasp the value of such an opportunity with Zomato.
The marketing team of Zomato seized this opportunity and launched the Rs 30 Zomato Gold offer. The promotion was shared via social media with a cheeky caption: “Special offer for this weekend by Chief of Marketing Staff,” jokingly adding that no fancy pricey fees were required for this membership. The accompanying image stated, “Update from CEO: No need to pay us Rs 20 lakh. Just pay Rs 30 for 6 months of Zomato Gold,” but it was obvious that the purpose of this message was to take a dig at Goyal’s previous job posting.
