A recent LinkedIn post by an executive director sparked heated debate online over the importance of using the ‘reply all’ method in emails.

Communication is essential at any workplace but even small mistakes can cause big problems. This was highlighted in a recent LinkedIn post by Ben Newman, Executive Director of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and Catapult Opera. The post was about professional email etiquette as it focused on the importance of using the “reply all” method in emails. Not only this, Newman also warned that failing to do so could result in job offers being withdrawn.
“If I write you an email with a work offer and there are other people copied on the email, and you DO NOT REPLY ALL, I will revoke the offer. It’s absolutely insane that in 2024 so many people under the age of 40 know how to use advanced software programs but can’t be bothered to hit reply all on an email. It wastes time, forces unnecessary follow up, and clogs people’s inboxes,” Newman wrote.
He also pointed out that he frequently has to remind candidates to “reply all,” in group emails which he believes should already be standard practice especially for those over 25 or with prior job experience. “It is mind boggling to me that I have to include notes that say “Please remember to reply all” in professional emails when I’m the one trying to hire YOU,” the executive wrote.
“I understand accommodating people but it is not my job to teach you professional email etiquette. (That’s not classism, it’s just facts) And frankly, unless you’ve never had a job that requires you to communicate with people professionally, and/or are under the age of 25, you have no excuse,” he continued.
Newman further stressed the importance of acting professionally and being considerate toward colleagues. “Take the time to learn what it means to be a professional, be aware and considerate of the people who work tirelessly to ensure you have opportunities to work, and do better. Who knows, you just might get more work and money as a result…” he concluded.
Newman’s post gained significant attention online with many social media users criticising his strict stance on email etiquette.
One user quipped, “Someone didn’t reply all to your little group so you replied to the world with this post? LOL. Ok.”
Another said, “Most people are taught to NOT REPLY ALL because it creates unnecessary emails. It’s up to you to set the expectation. Not expect them to read your mind.”
“I am sorry but this post is the most ridiculous post I have ever read on LinkedIn….I really hope whomever wrote this professionally grows to the point where they realize how awful they sound,” someone wrote

“You did that person a favor by revoking the offer if them not hitting “Reply All” is the biggest concern you have. No telling what other grossly toxic nonsense they would have to deal with there,” a person commented.
