A shocking video from West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, highlighting the failure of the healthcare system’s access to the poor, is doing the rounds of social media. According to Local 18 Jharkhand, the relatives of an ill person had to make their way to the hospital by walking under a train. After having a first glance at the video, it may seem that a relief and rescue operation is underway after a train has been stopped midway.
The victim hails from the Mundasai village, Khuntpani Block in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand. Initially, when his condition deteriorated, his family members dialled 108 for an ambulance, to take him to a Sub-Divisional Hospital at Champua. However, the ambulance couldn’t reach the victim’s home as there was no road through which the vehicle could commute to the patient’s house. Due to this reason, the ambulance was stopped 1 kilometer before. The relatives had to carry the sick family member on a stretcher to the ambulance.
On their way to the ambulance, the family members also had to cross a railway track. They saw a cargo train on the track and decided to wait for its departure. However, the patient’s condition was deteriorating rapidly, so they decided to cross the track by taking the patient under the cargo train. Risking their lives, some of the family members took the stretcher beneath the train and then crossed the track themselves. They managed to reach the ambulance somehow and now the ailing member is being treated in the Sub-Divisional Hospital at Champua. There is no update regarding the ailing member’s health.
The roads have not been built to date in Jaintgarh village, Jagannathpur Block in West Singhbhum District, Jharkhand. Due to this reason, the public has to face such problems. The government spends a huge chunk of money on roads and health schemes. However, when the public faces such problems, the question arises whether such expenditure incurred by the government is utilised productively or not. circumstances on the ground raise questions about that expenditure.
