Winning a lottery is a dream that only few get to experience but for an Indian-origin man in Singapore, it became a reality that left him and his wife overjoyed. A gold purchase he made three months ago for his wife turned out to be the key to a life-changing moment. Balasubramanian Chithambaram, an Indian-origin project engineer, won a grand prize of US$1 million (over Rs 8 crore) in a lucky draw organised by Mustafa Jewellery.
According to Asia One, the draw was part of the store’s annual event and took place at the Civil Service Club in Tessensohn on Sunday, November 24. Customers who spent at least S$250 (around Rs 15,650) at the store were eligible to participate. Chithambaram had spent S$6,000 (nearly Rs 3.79 lakh) on gold chains for his wife three months ago but never imagined that this purchase would change his life.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Chithambaram shared his feelings during a video call after receiving the news. He described the win as a blessing especially because it coincided with his late father’s fourth death anniversary. “Today is also my father’s fourth death anniversary. It’s a blessing,” Chithambaram said as quoted by the outlet.
Chithambaram further added that he plans to share the news with his mother. He also expressed his desire to give back to the community as a gesture of gratitude for the support he received during his 21 years of working in Singapore.
The lucky draw brought happiness to other participants as well. Several customers walked away with prizes of US$5,000 (around Rs 4.2 lakh) during the event.
This isn’t the first time a wife’s advice has led to incredible luck for a husband. Back in April 2023, a man from Klang, Malaysia, struck gold after following his wife’s suggestion, winning RM3 million (S$900,000) which is around Rs 5.6 crore.
The man, identified as Cheng, was a regular lottery player who typically bet on the same set of numbers. However, when he went to buy a ticket that time, his usual numbers were unavailable. His wife then suggested he try his luck with a Big Sweep ticket instead.
“It turns out, listening to my wife helped me to win!” Cheng had told the Sin Chew Daily. He had further mentioned to the Chinese news outlet that he planned to use part of the money to secure his children’s future and decided to let his wife handle the rest of the money.
