Maulana Masood clarifies that in Islam, a man can marry his wife’s cousin’s daughter.
In a world that is home to diverse religions, each with its own set of rules and laws, it’s not uncommon for people to seek clarity on matters of religious practice. This is particularly true when it comes to marriage, a topic that often leads to confusion, even within the same faith. In Islam, like in many other religions, there are specific rules governing who one can marry, and sometimes these guidelines can be hard to interpret.
To help clear such doubts, a prominent Maulana, Mufti Tariq Masood, took to addressing questions from the public in a series of online videos. These sessions gained popularity as they provided answers to queries that many might not feel comfortable asking elsewhere.
One such question recently posed to Maulana Masood was a unique and somewhat perplexing one: ‘Can a man marry his wife’s cousin’s daughter?’ In response to the question, Maulana Mufti Tariq Masood clarified that, according to Islamic law, it is permissible for a man to marry his wife’s cousin’s daughter.
The marriage, or Nikah, can take place while the wife is still alive, and there are no prohibitions against such a union. However, the Maulana also pointed out an important distinction in his explanation: ‘a man cannot marry his wife’s sister’s daughter while his wife is still alive’. This is a clear restriction under Islamic law, which prohibits such a union during the wife’s lifetime.

That said, Maulana Masood clarified that after the wife’s passing, it is permissible for a man to marry her sister’s daughter, as the primary prohibition is lifted with the wife’s death.
In summary, while it is allowed for a man to marry his wife’s cousin’s daughter under Islamic law, certain restrictions apply when it comes to marrying his wife’s sister’s daughter, as long as his wife is living.
