Ten-year-old Bal Sant Abhinav Arora, who has nearly a million followers on Instagram, has been in the eye of a storm of late. Abhinav, famous for his devotional videos, has courted criticism for what many describe as “over the top” spirituality.
Abhinav did not directly answer this question. In an interview with The New Indians, he labelled online content creation as hypocritical.
He said: “Dekhiye aajkal toh log kitni gandi gandi cheezin daal rahe hain. Usko toh aap bada viral karte hain. Lekin main Sanatan Dharma ka prachaar karna chahta hun toh mujhe aap sab troll kar rahe hain.” (People post such terrible stuff online, and the media makes it go viral. But when I promote Sanatan Dharma, I get trolled.)

During the interview, Abhinav also spoke about his daily routine. His day starts at 3:30 am, followed by a ritual bath and takes two hours to chant mala jaap. Before going to school, he offers water to Tulsi and then offers puja to idols of Radha Govind.
After school, he does his homework, reads and learns Hindu holy books and performs other devotional practices. He explained: “Some people like to paint, some like to sing. I like to focus on the adhyatmik,” a word of Sanskrit origin that refers to the soul.
He got popular when a video of him crying before a Ganpati idol while praying went viral. Showing a very emotional side, he pleaded to the deity to “come back soon” during the visarjan of Ganesh.
However, people have doubted his authenticity. A YouTube channel Only Desi made two critical videos stating that Abhinav received immense interference from his father. They gave instances in which the young orator seemed to give replies that seemed memorised or looked at someone off-camera during interviews.
In one instance, Abhinav stumbled when the following question was posed: “When you look at someone, what thoughts come to your mind?” He remained silent for a lot of time, proving the fact that he was not good at answering unscripted questions.
One clip depicted him whispering, “Kya bolun?” [“What should I say?”] replying to a question about how he deals with fans who want to take a photograph with him.
